EMBER BOWLS CHARITY DAY – 2.00pm Sunday 1st July – followed by a BBQ

Please support our Charity Day on Saturday 1 July. It will be a 2pm for 2.30pm start with games on the green followed by a BBQ at 4.45pm.

The charity is ‘OASIS’.  Oasis provides vital support to vulnerable families and children in Elmbridge and the surrounding areas.  Its efforts are recognised as having a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable families and children in our local community – a beacon of hope and refuge for those in need.

BBQ tickets should be purchased in advance at £10 per person. Sylvia Jones, Wendy Beaney and Mary/Tony Baker have tickets.

Fun games on the green will start around 2.30pm with a ‘Spider’ followed by different games on the six rinks. It will be a £1 entry per try per game. There will be a prize for the winner of each game. Three woods to be used for each game (except the putting!).

The games are:

Rink 1 – “Target bowls”: target pinned to green with score for each bowl at the end of 3 woods that is in the target.
Rink 2 – “Hit the Jack”: 3 jacks set out on the rink and one point for each jack hit.
Rink 3- “Nearest the Ditch”: send woods towards the ditch and the nearest wood to the ditch wins.
Rink 4 – “Beat the Captain”: try and get a wood nearer the jack than Tony Baker. If you do he will pay £3 each time to the charity and you will enter a ‘final’ for the winner prize.
Rink 5 – “Hit the Teddy”: a Teddy will be on the rink and 1 point for each time you hit it.
Rink 6 – “Target Putting”: a target pinned to green with score for each golf ball in the target (woods not to be used!).

After the games finish at around 4.00pm, ‘finals’ will take place where required for each game followed by the presentation of prizes to the winners. The raffle will also be drawn. There will then be a bbq at about 4.45pm for which you will need to purchase tickets in advance.

The raffle tickets cost £5 per strip. It is best to buy tickets in advance (especially if you cannot attend on the day!) and put your name on each ticket in the book.

Members are reminded please to donate prizes (a box is by the door in the Clubhouse) and we also hope to have some additional prizes from outside the club!

A Night to Remember (featuring a Leopard, a nonagenarian and a gender dispute.)

Ember Bowls Club’s normal Monday Club Night was interrupted by the President of Surrey County Bowls Association together with his Vice-President, Secretary and Match Secretary who came to present our Chairman Ken Homewood with the prestigious Surrey County Leopard Award. This award is made by the County Association to recognise long and distinguished service by a club member in the service of their Club. Surrey President, Brian Shellard, cited Ken’s service as Captain, two spells as Chairman totalling 13 years, organising many social events and his running of the Evening league, particularly with its role in developing bowlers. Congratulations Ken.

You might remember that in 2016 Jerry Ingham was also awarded his Leopard Badge. So, not to be outdone, this occasion also marked Jerry’s 90th birthday. A card signed by club members was presented to him by fellow leopard, Ken Homewood. Happy Birthday Jerry

This was not an ordinary club night as it marked the annual Gentlemen vs. Ladies grudge match. This year the respective captains were Mary and Tony Baker so it was something of a domestic dispute. The Gentlemen ran out as winners (74-49) and Tony gracefully accepted the trophy from Mary… Congratulations Tony

Ember Win The Ungless Shield (again!)

Ember ran out as winners of the Peter Ungless Shield in a tight game against Carshalton BC played on the neutral green at Cheam Sports BC on Sunday 21st August. Ember have had some tight games against Carshalton in the past and this was no different with a final score of 37 – 36.

The Peter Ungless Shield is a knock-out competition played between the teams in the Racal-Decca league.

Here we see the victorious team of Linda Pillman, Ken Homewood, Dick Jones, Colin Jones. Jenny Baird, Tony Baker, Lorna Kilpatrick and Sylvia Jones together with Captain Malcolm Baird (with the winner’s shield).

Congratulations to all players, including those who played in the earlier rounds. Now go on and win the League (also again!)

Jubilee Memories

The Jubilee Roll-up was attended by 24 bowlers who were blessed with a sunny day.
They dressed in various forms of red, white & blue with Wendy Beaney winning the prize for the “Best Costume”. The day ended with free slices of cake kindly donated by Debbie Johns.

Great Work -Thanks All Round

Many thanks to the dozen or so of you who turned up for our Green Preparation working parties on Friday and Saturday. In almost record time we managed to Scarify, Tine, Over-seed, Feed and Top Dress the Green. Sorted out the benches, tables and chairs. Cleaned up the flower beds and paths. And tidied up the Cabin.
Great work. All is now ready for the Grand Opening on Easter Weekend.

Job Done – But There’s More To Come

We Got The Painters In

Thanks to all those involved in cleaning down, surface preparation and toshing on the paint to give the Bowls Cabin a fresh appearance and kick-starting our preparations for the 2022 season. The work continues on Friday and Saturday (19th & 20th March) when we start the Spring Renovation of The Green. Thanks to those who have volunteered already; there’s a lot to do as we tine, scarify, seed, feed and surface dress the Green. We are sure there is something you can help with so come and join us.

2021 Finals – Saturday’s Results

Congratulations to today’s winners.

There’s more tomorrow with 3 games in the morning, including Ember playing in the final of this year’s Coronation Triples against Supreme BC.  In the Afternoon we play all of the Singles Championship matches together with the Invitation Mixed Pairs final.  Join in the fun and support your fellow Club members.  Ploughman’s Lunches are available, there a decent selection of raffle prizes to be won, the Bar is open and there’s all the fun of a finals day to enjoy.

Surrey Champion of Champions, 2021

Jackie Cornwell with her 2019 Ember Champions Trophy

Congratulations to Jackie Cornwell on winning the Surrey County Ladies Champion of Champions Final, which was held at Bletchinly BC on Sunday 15th August.

Jackie beat Sheila Seddon of Milford BC 21-6 in the final of this prestigeous competition between the ladies’ singles champions of all the clubs in Surrey. A truly superb achievement.

Well done, Jackie!  Many congratulations!  We are proud of you!

Jackie will receive the trophy at the Surrey County Women’s Association Annual Dinner on the evening of Friday 22nd October at Tyrells Wood Golf Club. It would be wonderful if Ember players could attend and support both Jackie and Linda Pillman, the Senior Vice-President of SCWBA, who takes over as President at the AGM on 20th November.
