A great find from one of our bowlers, Sylvia. An old issue of Country Life from 1972, with a fantastic article on the great game throughout the ages.

Numbers may now be purchased for Ember’s 2019 “200 Club” which starts on 1st January. All profits will go to Ember Sports Club and during 2018 I am delighted to report that, thanks to our members’ generosity, a total of 198 tickets were purchased and we raised over £1,000. Our most sincere thanks to all those many members who have participated!
For 2019 the basis of the allocation of the prize money will remain the same as for 2018. There will be three prizes for each draw and draws will be made bi-monthly, the first one being made in February. The total prize money for 2019 will be paid on the same basis as the present system (50% of the revenue). Thus if 200 numbers were purchased the pay-outs would be as follows (N.B. the prize value would be decreased or increased proportionately if fewer or more numbers are sold):
5 bi-monthly draws (February, April, June, August, & October) with prizes of:
1st £100
2nd £50
3rd £20
1 Jackpot draw at Christmas with prizes of:
1st £200
2nd £100
3rd £50
Do please support the Ember 200 Club – the cost equates to just £1 per month per number purchased. If you would like to have a particular number(s) please indicate this on the form. If this number(s) has already been sold you will be allocated an alternative number(s). The sooner you apply the more likely you are to have your choice of numbers! And the good news is that there is no limit to how many numbers you can buy!
An application form is attached which please complete and return to me with your payment (either cash or cheque payable to “Ember Sports Club 200 Club” please). If you have any queries please telephone me on 020 8398 4622 or e-mail me on malcjen@ntlworld.com.

A picture from the Ember Ladies 2018 Christmas Lunch. Cheers!
Some photos from last night’s Bowls section games evening at Ember. It was a close set of matches across a range of games, but the ‘dream team’ of Pat O’Hagan, Mike Cutts and Louise Griffith pipped the others to the post and took 1st place by a third of a point – congratulations to the winners!
Thanks to all for taking part and special thanks to Dick Jones, Linda Pillman, Ken Homewood and all who organised the evening and provided some great food and drink.
A great feature this week in the Surrey Advertiser about the amazing Ember big band masterclass that took place at Ember Sports Club ahead of the band’s upcoming Christmas concert at Claygate Village Hall.
They were also joined by an extra-special guest, Louise Clare Marshall, singer with the Jools Holland Orchestra! Here’s a copy of the article and some pics from the masterclass.
The tennis section held an Indian themed Ladies evening on October 16th for the Ladies of the whole club. Our dance teacher, Gita taught us Bhangra and Bollywood dancing, and how to wear a sari. With good food and company the evening flew by and we finished with a meditation taster, led by our tennis member yoga teacher, Julia. A great evening, with requests for a repeat early next year!
At Ember, we’re lucky to have Robbie Blundell, our amazing junior tennis coach who runs term-time courses and holiday camps all year round, for all ages and abilities.
Every year Rob coaches our junior and mini tennis sections, helping hundreds of youngsters to find out about the game, learn the essential skills for becoming a great tennis player and have fun along the way!
Rob has over 12 years coaching experience working with juniors and adults and was trained at the Bruguera Tennis Academy in Barcelona.
Rob’s qualifications and experience over the years are vast, and include:
He is active in all areas of tennis at the club, and is always to be seen around helping at open days, events and just chatting to members and offering advice.
If you’d like to know more about mini and junior tennis, drop us a line through our contact page, or phone Rob up for a chat to see what he can do to help your kids become the next Andy Murray! Get in touch with us via our contact page
Bob and Mike had a close game with Southwick’s doubles pairing (Debora and Morgan) but eventually lost out by 5 hoops in the morning. Mike was full of cold and not his usual sparkling self. Bob hit a beautiful, but unintentional jump shot, at a time when, at last, he looked like he was stringing a break together.
Edward Jones is just an ordinary guy, doing ordinary things – if you count scaling towering electricity pylons for a living as ordinary! Then, the day before his 40th birthday, he gets struck by lightning!
What happens next is, quite literally, incredible. It defies logic and the fundamental laws of nature. It is a very funny and quite poignant story.
