Croquet came to Ham House in S.W. London on a sunny June weekend, as Jaques of London held two of their Family Fun days there in conjunction with the National Trust. Along with other outdoor games, five short lawns were laid out for croquet and lots of people, with lots of children, came to have a go. Members of Ember Croquet Club, Esher joined Ben Jaques and his son Tom in providing instruction and assistance, which were eagerly welcomed
Faint hopes of finding new club members were dashed as so few of the visitors were local, but helpers found sufficient reward from the enthusiasm of the mostly novice players and the congenial surroundings, marred only by the house being shrouded in scaffolding. At a time when there has been talk of croquet ‘croaking’ by 2037, it was an opportunity to help maintain public awareness of the game, and perhaps even spark a germ of interest here and there in the next generation of potential players.
The summer B.B.Q. will be in The Club Garden on Saturday 22nd August. Bring your own meat / fish /veggie burger to cook on the coals.
The salads and desserts will be ready and waiting for you. £5 is the usual charge for the evening.
It would be helpful for the catering to have some idea if you are hoping to come. For info or to let us know you’re coming, email derek.beaney4@ntlworld.com

A classic from the archives for a Sunday morning – David Bryan vs. Philip Chok from the 1980 world indoor bowls championship finals. What a match!

Some pictures from Ember’s day out at the seaside to play against Marine Gardens Bowls Club.
A great day was had by all, with fish and chips, a stroll down the beach and 6 rinks of play in the afternoon, followed by a slap-up dinner at the Watermill Inn, Dorking, which served up the biggest cheeseboard I’ve ever seen for dessert!
Thank you to our very kind hosts for a lovely day, and for some great games. Ember narrowly lost by 4 points, but it was close! Also thanks to our coach driver Ron, who entertained us on the way there and back.

The bowls section’s yearly challenge match against the rest of Ember Sports Club took place this week, showing the other sections what a great game bowls is!
This year some keen croquet, drama, social and tennis members became bowlers for the night to ‘have a go’ and enjoy some friendly club rivalry.
A great time was had by all, with fish and chips and a few light ales to round off the evening.
See you all again next year for the re-match!
Kay Ruffell gathers up the bowls ready for the next end.

We start the new Ember Players year by thanking Anne Segall for her marvellous hard working tenure as Chairman. On stage, backstage and directing all done with the commitment she shows to everything. It was fitting that the season ended so successfully with her production of A Man For All Seasons.
We are now in the capable hands of Elaine Sesemann and a Committee with some new additions, Julia Cutcliffe and Lisa Mills join Steve Clunn, Nick Graham, Colin Jones, Clare Woolett, Stuart Williams and Gillian Beaney. Welcome all.
So now Members come and enjoy the Summer social activities. The first is a sociable play reading. Relax with a glass of wine while we read ‘ Lilies on the Land ‘. This play devised from more than 150 letters from the land army in the 1940’s involves 32 characters and should make for any entertaining evening. Having enjoyed that we hope you will come to the 2nd play reading on the 9th July.
Then it’s that time of year when we visit Chichester, to picnic in the park by the theatre and then enjoy the production of ‘Mack & Mabel’. To those who have reserved your tickets I will deliver them to you. To reserve the last 2 tickets phone me a.s.a.p. on 0208 398 6470.
Very good easyfundraising news. 3 Ember Players have signed up already. Thank you.
Finally The Ember Players would like to thank Pat Roddis for collating the Newsletter from all the sections and including our booking forms and everything else we ask her to do.
