National Croquet Day Sunday 5th June

ncdx
National Croquet Day (NCD)
Sunday 5th June 2016
Public Invitation
Come and try The Croquet Experience at Ember on National Croquet Day.  Members of the club will be here from 11am to 4pm  to welcome you and show you how to play.
Croquet: a sport with that competitive edge
Croquet: a game of skill that anyone can play
Croquet: try something new!
All you need to bring are a sense of fun and a pair of flat shoes (e.g. trainers).
National Croquet Day celebrates this interesting and addictive game that is increasing in popularity.
Croquet is a sport where you hit a ball through a series of hoops with a long mallet. It needs skill and tactics rather than brute strength, so men and women, young and old, play on equal terms using an effective handicapping system that allows beginners to challenge much better players.
Association Croquet (AC) and Golf Croquet (GC) are the main codes, each with its own demands and skills and much in common, especially that competitive edge! AC includes a variety of shots and break-building tactics to encourage scoring multiple hoops in a turn, whilst GC interactively contests each hoop, often with spectacular hoop shots and distant ball clearances.
The UK has a friendly and vibrant croquet scene with several world champions and world top-10 players.
Come along to Ember on Sunday 5th June between 11am and 4pm and have a go!

Croquet at Ham House

IMG_0258Ham House Terry

Ham HouseCroquet came to Ham House in S.W. London on a sunny June weekend, as Jaques of London held two of their Family Fun days there in conjunction with the National Trust. Along with other outdoor games, five short lawns were laid out for croquet and lots of people, with lots of children, came to have a go. Members of Ember Croquet Club, Esher joined Ben Jaques and his son Tom in providing instruction and assistance, which were eagerly welcomed

Ham House MikeFaint hopes of finding new club members were dashed as so few of the visitors were local, but helpers found sufficient reward from the enthusiasm of the mostly novice players and the congenial surroundings, marred only by the house being shrouded in scaffolding. At a time when there has been talk of croquet ‘croaking’ by 2037, it was an opportunity to help maintain public awareness of the game, and perhaps even spark a germ of interest here and there in the next generation of potential players.
